Friday, 28th Week in Ordinary Time

St. Callistus I, Pope and Martyr

Green.

Eph 1:11 – 14 / Lk 12:1- 7

Pope St.  Callistus I (d 222) was martyred in Rome under Alexander Severus.

Gospel Reading: Lk 12:1- 7

Meanwhile, such a numerous crowd had gathered that they crushed one another. Then Jesus spoke to his disciples in this way, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees which is hypocrisy. Nothing is covered that will not be uncovered, or hidden that will not be made known. Whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in daylight, and what you have whispered in hidden places, will be proclaimed from the housetops.

"I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who put to death the body and after that can do no more. But I will tell you whom to fear: Fear the One who after killing you is able to throw you into hell. This one you must fear. Don't you get five sparrows for two pennies? Yet not one of them has been forgotten by God. Even the hairs of your head have been numbered. So do not fear: are you not worth more than a flock of sparrows?"

Reflection

The first reading talks about God's plan of salvation for mankind.  Oftentimes we plan our lives from short-term to long-term and along the way things sometimes don't go the way we want them to.  Most of us also have a list of priorities in life and we usually prioritize making ourselves secured for the future.  Now let us ask ourselves, where in our plans does God fit in?  Is he part of our priorities in life?  For sure he wants to be part of our lives so shouldn't we let him be?  Due to disbelief and other reasons, we either ignore or forget to make God part of our lives.  But the beautiful thing is that even if we do so, God never forgets us.  The plan of the Lord for us is always greater than our plans for ourselves.  Therefore let us be open to him and ask the Holy Spirit to help us to trust in his plans for us.

The Gospel reading reminds us to be brave in spreading the word of God to others.  We sometimes find ourselves afraid of speaking about our faith in front of people we know and even more so in front of strangers.  The Gospel encourages us to be bold in giving testimony to Christ.  By this act of love for him, we will be deemed worthy to enter his kingdom because we have not been ashamed to present ourselves to others as his disciples.

So let us allow the Holy Spirit to work in us when we proclaim our faith to others.  Who else will speak of Jesus to others if not you and I?
