Wednesday, 22nd Week in Ordinary Time

Green.  

1 Cor 3:1 –  9 / Lk 4:38 – 44.

From the 1st Reading: 1 Cor 3:4 – 6

This is how we are sure of God through Christ.  As for us we would not dare consider that something comes from us:  our ability comes from God.  He has even enabled us to be ministers of a new covenant no longer depending on a written text but on the Spirit.  The written text kills, but the Spirit gives life. 

Gospel Reading: Lk 4:38 - 44

Leaving the synagogue, Jesus went to the house of Simon. His mother-in-law was suffering from high fever and they asked him to do something for her.  Bending over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. Immediately she got up and waited on them.

At sunset, people suffering from many kinds of sickness were brought to Jesus. Laying his hands on each one, he healed them. Demons were driven out, howling as they departed from their victims, "You are the Son of God!" He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, for they knew he was the Messiah.

Jesus left at daybreak and looked for a solitary place. People went out in search of him and, finding him, they tried to dissuade him from leaving. But he said, "I have to go to other towns to announce the good news of the kingdom of God. That is what I was sent to do." So Jesus continued to preach in the synagogues of the Jewish country.

Reflection

The Gospel reading presents to us Jesus and his busy public life. He healed the sick, drove out demons, and went around doing His Father's will.  But through his busy schedule, Jesus would still go off to a "solitary place" to pray. 

As we reflect on this, we cannot help but think: this Man could do all these miraculous things. Why would he need to pray?   But that's the secret – prayer and communion with God are key to Jesus' continuing work. 

If we claim to be his disciples, we should follow Jesus' example of prayer and communion with his Father. Let us find time in our busy daily lives to  find quiet time to pray to the Lord, giving thanks for his unconditional love, his continuing guidance and blessings.
