St. Henry (973 – 1024) was Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1014. His wife was St. Cunegunda of Luxembourg (795 – 1040).
Gospel Reading: Mt 11:25 - 27
On that occasion Jesus said, "Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I praise you, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to simple people. Yes, Father, this is what pleased you.
"Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
Reflection
Why do we take the time to read the Bible, to read numerous spiritual books, to attend bible studies or watch documentaries about our God? As the Gospel reading proclaims, "No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him."
Jesus tells us that anyone can know the Son. And all will be revealed in our pursuit to knowing more about Christ.
Why is it important to make that effort to know him? Isn't it enough to "know" of him, to know what he did?
It's just like having a true friend. Those we call true friends aren't BFF's (best friend forever) simply because we know them. Our knowledge of our BFF's has depth and that's why we truly love them. We know our best friends inside and out. We have a deep understanding of what makes them 'tick.' What moves them and motivates them. This 'deep understanding' of our best friends is what makes us "best friends forever."
It is not enough to just 'know' the Son as the One who died for us. We should know his heart in the same way we know our best friends. And the only way to do that is to approach him with an openness of heart and mind – to accept his love with the innocence and trust as that of a child. This is the beginning of developing a more intimate relationship with the Lord.
How have we 'hindered' ourselves from getting to know the Lord on a more personal level? What have we done or not done that prevents us from making the Son, our own BFF?
