St. Martha, Disciple of the Lord
Memorial. White.
Jer 26:1 – 9 / Lk 10:38 – 42
Our Lord was a close family friend of St. Martha, her sister Mary and brother Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead.
Gospel Reading: Lk 10: 38 – 42
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he entered a village and a woman called Martha welcomed him to her house. She had a sister named Mary who sat down at the Lord's feet to listen to his words. Martha, meanwhile, was busy with all the serving and finally she said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do all the serving?"
But the Lord answered, "Martha, Martha, you worry and are troubled about many things, whereas only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her."
Reflection
Like Martha, many Christians are anxious and too pre-occupied with many earthly concerns. These concerns are not bad; they are necessary because we have to deal with the demands of daily life. But in the process, one may forget the most important aspect of life – our spiritual life.
As in the Gospel reading, Martha put all her energies in being the perfect hostess, preparing a perfect meal and doing other chores. So she had no time to listen to Jesus' words of wisdom. Her work may have been perfect and faultless, but she was missing something more important. Her sister Mary had chosen to listen to Jesus' teaching, and for Jesus this was more important.
All well-meaning Christians can learn from this Gospel scene. Sometimes we work very hard and in doing so, we neglect the spiritual side of our lives. We may find satisfaction with our work but without God's blessing, all we do is like a puff in the wind. Personal success in life is important but to aim for God's kingdom is more important. How many adults realize this when it is too late – that they spent too much time working and amassing a fortune and neglected to spend more time for God and family. And those who enter old age, because they see that their bodies are deteriorating, realize that the things of the spirit are more important. God is telling them that in heaven one does not need to be pre-occupied with anything. All one needs to do is to contemplate the face of God.
