Sts. Leon-Ignace Mangin, Augustine Zhao Rong, Priests,
and Companions, Martyrs
Memorial. Red.
Is 6:1 – 8 / Mt 10:24 – 33.
Today is the memorial for 120 Martyrs of China, 87 Chinese and 33 Western missionaries, martyred for their faith from 1648 to 1900 and canonized by St. John Paul II in 2000. St. Leon-Ignace Mangin (1857 – 1900) was a french Jesuit missionary; St. Ausgustine Zhao Rong ( d 1815) was a Chinese diocesan priest.
From the 1st Reading: Is 6:6 - 7
One of the seraphs flew to me; in his hands was a live coal which he had taken with tongs from the altar. He touched my mouth with it and said, "See this has touched your lips. Your guilt is taken away and your sin forgiven."
Gospel Reading: Mt 10:24 – 25, 28 – 33
Jesus said to his disciples, "A student is not above his teacher, or a slave above his master. A student should be glad to become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If the head of the family has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of the family! So, do not be afraid of them. . . .
"Do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but have no power to kill the soul. Rather be afraid of him who can destroy both body and soul in hell. For only a few cents you can buy two sparrows, yet not one sparrow falls to the ground without your Father's consent. As for you, every hair of your head has been counted. So do not be afraid: you are worth much more than many sparrows.
"Whoever acknowledges me before others I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven. Whoever rejects me before others I will reject before my Father in heaven."
Reflection
As Christians, we all have a prophetic role. We are called to announce the Gospel. Whether at home, in school or at work, to our families and friends, strangers and acquaintances, the love of God must be proclaimed.
The Devil also knows this. And in order to hinder the spreading of the Good News, he will try to discourage us. He will remind us of our sins and our unfaithfulness. He will use guilt, so that we may lose hope in ourselves. We will also be hurt by the rejection of some people who are closest to us.
Today's readings give us encouragement during times of persecution. God wants to remind us that He chooses the weak and sinners to announce His love and mercy, because they have experienced the Good News themselves. People will also see that it is by His grace and love and power that we are able to speak about God. Let us ask God for the strength and courage to speak the Truth of the Gospel despite our self-doubts and rejection from others.
