Saturday, 3rd Week of Easter

16 April 2016

Saturday, 3rd Week of Easter

White.

Acts 9:31 – 42 / Jn 6: 60 – 69

From the 1st Reading: Acts 9: 34, 40

Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you: get up and make your bed." And the man got up at once. . . .

Turning to the dead body, Peter said, "Tabitha, stand up.' She opened her eyes, looked at Peter and sat up.

Gospel Gospel: Jn 6: 60 - 69

After hearing this, many of Jesus' followers said, "This language is very hard! Who can accept it?"

Jesus was aware that his disciples were murmuring about this and so he said to them, "Does this offend you? Then how will you react when you see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh cannot help. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. But among you there are some who do not believe."

From the beginning, Jesus knew who would betray him. So he added, "As I have told you, no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father."

After this many disciples withdrew and no longer followed him. Jesus asked the Twelve, "Will you also go away?"  Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We now believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."

Reflection

In the first reading, Peter cures a paralytic and raises a dead woman to life.  What Jesus said in the gospel is true – that his disciples will be able to do the marvels he had done when he was with them.

Do you believe that you can perform miracles?  The criterion is to believe in the power of Jesus to use you to save or help other people. Peter does not use his God-given powers to help himself but to help others. God has given us certain graces which when we learn how to do, we should use for the good of others. All men should think of filling up other people's needs.  It is always better to give than to receive. This saying is very true, yet many people prefer to do the opposite.

In the Gospel reading, many of Jesus' followers stop believing in him when he proclaimed that he was the bread of life.  Of course it was disappointing but that is not worrisome.  The Church does not need big numbers.  She needs genuine believers who are serious about their faith in Jesus.

Jesus does not need big crowds.  He wants true believers.  To follow Jesus is a gift and a privilege.  The one who does it is blessed by God with spiritual joy, the ability to see the real needs of people and the capacity to make a difference in their lives.
