FRIDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time

October 2, 2015 FRIDAY, 26TH Week in Ordinary Time

The Guardian Angels

Memorial, White

Bar 1:15-22 / Mt 18:1-5. 10

Reading: Bar 1:15-22

You will say: May everyone recognize the justice of our God but, on this day, shame and confusion befit the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem –our kings and princes, our priests, our prophets, and our fathers, because we have sinned before the Lord. We have disobeyed him and have not listened to the voice of the Lord our God, nor have we followed the commandments which the Lord had put before us. From the day that the Lord brought our ancestors out of the land of Egypt until this day, we have disobeyed the Lord our God and we have rebelled against him instead of listening to his voice.

Because of this, from the day on which the Lord brought our ancestors out of the land of Egypt, so as to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, the evils and the curse which the Lord pronounced by Moses, his servant, have dogged our footsteps right down to the present day. We did not listen to the voice of the Lord our God speaking through the words of the prophets whom he sent to us, but each one of us followed his perverted heart, serving false gods and doing what displeases the Lord our God.

Gospel: Mt 18:1-5. 10

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked him, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" Then Jesus called a little child, set the child in the midst of the disciples, and said, "I assure you that unless you change and become like little children, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes lowly like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven, and whoever receives such a child in my name receives me. See that you do not despise any of these little ones, for I tell you: their angels in heaven continually see the face of my heavenly Father.

Reflection:

St. Bernard a doctor of the Church said about our Guardian Angels: "They are here to protect and serve you. Let us be devoted to them. Let us return their love, and honor them. One, they will be our co-heirs just as here below they are our guardians appointed and set over us by the Father." Our Guardian Angels have been sent by God because He is always concerned about our spiritual well-being. How lucky to have a loving Father! We therefore must be grateful to our parents, teachers, parish priests, etc. who have served as our guardians one time or another. Their mission is to protect us from evil and to help us on the right path. Even our household helpers in their humble capacity should be the object of our gratitude. In turn, we are called to be guardians to our children, younger siblings, friends, etc.  We must guide others to become good Christians, counseling the wayward and training the ignorant. We are called to be angelic to one another. If everyone watches out for everyone else, how can anything go wrong in the world? The Gospel says that the children of God have guardian angels. Let us all be aware of our Guardian Angels' presence in our lives as they help us to be stronger to resist temptation and avoid sin.
