Then he showed me the river of life, clear as crystal, gushing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of the city, on both sides of the river are the trees of life producing fruit twelve times, once each month, the leaves of which are for healing the nations. No longer will there be a curse; the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the City and God's servants will live in his presence. They will see his face and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of lamp or sun for God himself will be their light and they will reign forever. Then the angel said to me, "These words are sure and true; the Lord God who inspires the prophets has sent his angel to show his servants what must happen soon." "I am coming soon! Happy are those who keep the prophetic words of this book."

Be on your guard; let not your hearts be weighed down with a life of pleasure, drunkenness and worldly cares, lest that day catch you suddenly as a trap. For it will come upon all the inhabitants of the whole earth. But watch at all times and pray, that you may be able to escape all that is bound to happen and to stand before the Son of Man."

Francisco de Hoyos was born in Valladolid, Spain on August 21, 1711. Studying in the Jesuit school at Medina del Campo, he was so drawn to the Jesuit way of life that at the age of 14, he wanted to enter the Society of Jesus. During his two years as a novice, the "boy saints" Aloysius Gonzaga and Stanislaus Kostka were canonized, while John Berchman's was also in the process. These young saints were Bernardo's models of holiness. By the time Bernardo was 21, when most of young men and women were still in adolescence, Bernardo was already able to say to his spiritual director, "I see that everything in my heart is moving towards God, drawn like an iron to a magnet. It desires only God, searches only for God, and longs only for God."
On May 3, 1733, as a scholastic, Bernardo experienced the Lord entrusting him with a mission: "I wish for you to spread the devotion to my Sacred Heart throughout all of Spain." From then on, Bernardo did all he could to follow the Lord's command. He formed a group of devoted collaborators to communicate the essence of devotion to the Sacred Heart. Bernardo himself would distribute prayer cards and leaflets and founded many confraternities and associations in honor of the Sacred Heart. The best way he spread this devotion however, was through his own holiness, piety, and personal witness to the love of Christ.
Bernardo was ordained a priest, on 2 January 1735, but less than a year later he died at the age of 24 after contracting typhus.
At such a young age, Bernardo knew what was in his heart. In these modern times, when our youth are distracted by the petty concerns the world presents to them, maybe we can pray, in the words of St. Claude de la Colombiere, SJ:
O God, what will you do to conquer the fearful hardness of our hearts?
Lord, you must give us new hearts, tender hearts, sensitive hearts,
to replace hearts that are made of marble and of bronze.
You must give us your own Heart, Jesus. Come, lovable Heart of Jesus.
Place your Heart deep in the center of our hearts
and enkindle in each heart a flame of love as strong, as great,
as the sum of all the reasons that I have for loving you, my God.
O holy Heart of Jesus, dwell hidden in my heart,
so that I may live only in you and only for you,
so that, in the end, I may live with you eternally in Heaven. Amen.
