Monday 14th Week in Ordinary Time

July 7, 2014
Monday 14th Week in Ordinary Time

Hos 2: 16, 17c-18, 21-22 / Ps 145: 2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 / Mt 9: 18-26

Reading: Hos 2: 16, 17c-18, 21-22
So I am going to allure her, lead her once more into the desert, where I can speak to her tenderly. There she will answer me as in her youth, as when she came out of the land of Egypt. On that day, Yahweh says, you will call me my husband, and never again: my Baal. You will be my spouse forever, betrothed in justice and integrity; we will be united in love and tenderness. I will espouse you in faithfulness and you will come to know Yahweh.

Gospel: Matthew 9: 18-26
While Jesus was speaking to them, an official of the synagogue came up to him, bowed before him and said, "My daughter has just died, but come and place your hands on her, and she will live." Jesus stood up and followed him with his disciples. Then a woman who had suffered from a severe bleeding for twelve years came up from behind and touched the edge of his cloak.  For she thought, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed." Jesus turned, saw her and said, "Courage, my daughter, your faith has saved you." And from that moment the woman was cured. When Jesus arrived at the official's house and saw the flute players and the excited crowd, he said, "Get out of here! The girl is not dead. She is only sleeping!" And they laughed at him. But once the crowd had been turned out, Jesus went in and took the girl by the hand, and she stood up. The news of this spread through the whole area.

Reflection:
The evangelist presents two miracles:  the bleeding woman healed, and a child resurrected. What is the message brought to us by the two miracles? The father requesting favor for his daughter and the woman touching Jesus' garment are both seeking love. First of all, these people heard about Jesus' mercy and love and they believed. The girl's father out of love for his daughter personally went to ask Jesus. The sick woman pushed herself among the crowd to reach Jesus believing that just by the touch of his cloak she could be healed. These events show faith in God's love and mercy for those who believe.
Taking the same situations in our time, if we have the capacity to pay, we go first to the best physician and buy the best medicine. This is our normal move. Only those without the capacity to pay go to faith healers or pray to God hoping for a miracle. Like the father and the woman in the gospel reading, we need God. Are we conscious of this need or not?  If we need physical healing, we also need spiritual healing. Let us put our trust in God who is the divine healer.
Let us pray to the Lord to increase our faith: Lord, I believe you can do all things. I believe in your infinite compassion and love. I believe that you can heal the sick and raise the dead. I believe that although my loved one suffers now, she/he will see the light of your love and when she/he does, I believe you will heal her/him. I ask for humility. I ask for wisdom to serve you in all things. I believe in you and I pray that my loved one will soon feel your grace.  AMEN.

Prayer Requests:
We pray ...
... for a deep and profound respect for life, especially for the unborn
... for all the prayer intentions in the MTQ Dailyprayer Diary
... for families who are in need of healing
