14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – C

JULY 7, 2013
14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – C

Is 66:10-14 / Gal 6:14-18 / Ps 66: 1-3. 4-5. 6-7. 16. 20 / Lk 10:1-12,17-20

Isaiah 66:10-14
"Rejoice for Jerusalem and be glad for her, all you who love her. Be glad with her, rejoice with her, all you who were in grief over her, that you may suck of the milk from her comforting breasts, that you may drink deeply from the abundance of her glory." For this is what Yahweh says: I will send her peace, over flowing like a river; and the nations' wealth, rushing like a torrent towards her. And you will be nursed and carried in her arms and fondled upon her lap. As a son comforted by his mother, so will I comfort you. At the sight of this, your heart will rejoice; like grass, your bones will flourish. For it shall be known that Yahweh's hand is with his servant, but his fury is upon his enemy.

Galatians 6:14-18
For the whole Law is summed up in this sentence: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you bite and tear each other to pieces, be careful lest you all perish. Therefore I say to you: walk according to the Spirit and do not give way to the desires of the flesh! For the desires of the flesh war against the spirit, and the desires of the spirit are opposed to the flesh. Both are in conflict with each other, so that you cannot do everything you would like. But when you are led by the Spirit you are not under the Law.

Luke 10:1-12,17-20
After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two other disciples, and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place, where he himself was to go. And he said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. So you must ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers to his harvest. Courage! I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Set off without purse or bag or sandals; and do not stop at the homes of those you know. Whatever house you enter, first bless them, saying, `Peace to this house!' If a friend of peace lives there, the peace shall rest upon that person. But if not, the blessing will return to you. Stay in that house, eating and drinking at their table, for the worker deserves to be paid. Do not move from house to house. When they welcome you to any town, eat what they offer you. Heal the sick who are there, and say to them: `The kingdom of God has drawn near to you.' But in any town where you are not welcome, go to the marketplace and proclaim: `Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off and leave with you. But know for a certainty that the kingdom of God has drawn near to you.' I tell you, that on the Day of Judgment it will be better for Sodom than for this town. The seventy-two disciples returned full of joy. They said, "Lord, even the demons obeyed us when we called on your name." Then Jesus replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. You see, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the Enemy, so that nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, don't rejoice because the evil spirits submit to you; rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven."

REFLECTION
In many countries of the world today, there are more and more people who are unemployed or under-employed. There are not enough job opportunities for the growing number of people. In short, there are too many laborers! And yet, our Lord continues to speak to our present times by saying that "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few." For our Lord, the harvest is plentiful as long as there are many who are sick and are lost. The reason he came into our world is to bring salvation to those who are sick and lost (Mt. 9:12-13).

The mission of our Lord is indeed so great! Because there are so many people to reach out to, he calls and sends his disciples to many places. When our Lord called his first disciples, he told them that he would make them "fishers of men" (Mt. 4:19). In our gospel today, he appoints seventy-two others and sends them to more places. But still, he asks us to pray earnestly for more laborers. Indeed, there are not enough "laborers" or "fishers of men" for this great mission.

Do we hear our Lord calling us? Do we accept his invitation? Many who look for employment often take into consideration the compensation that they will receive for the work that they will render. Our Lord assures us that "the laborer deserves his wages." More so, however, our Lord invites us to labor with him in his mission because there will be much joy "that our names are written in heaven." There will be much joy in the knowledge that we are united with him who has found us and saved us in spite of our unworthiness!
