SATURDAY 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR II

DECEMBER 22, 2012
SATURDAY 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR II

1 Sm 1:24-28 / Lk 1:46-56

1 SAMUEL 1:24-28
When the child was weaned, Hannah took him with her along with a three-year-old bull, a measure of flour and a flask of wine, and she brought him to Yahweh's house at Shiloh. The child was still young. After they had slain the bull, they brought the child to Eli. Hannah exclaimed: "Oh, my lord, look! I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to Yahweh. I asked for this child and Yahweh granted me the favor I begged of him. Now, I think, Yahweh is asking for this child. As long as he lives, he belongs to Yahweh." And they worshiped Yahweh there.

LUKE 1:46-56
And Mary said, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God my savior! He has looked upon his servant in her lowliness, and people forever will call me blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name! From age to age his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up those who are downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty. He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever." Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned home.

REFLECTION
It is beautiful how our Gospels are full of paradoxes; how we are strongest when we are weak; how we are truly rich when we are poor, or even how we are poor when we are rich. Through Mary, God has shown us how we are made great when we are little, how we can do everything when we are nothing. Mary's "yes" gave the world our Savior!

Today's Gospel, the Magnificat, is a beautiful prayer from God's most faithful and humble servant – Mary. Mary acknowledges all things as coming from God. This should really be our mindset in all that we do. We know that whatever goals we have achieved, whatever abilities or talents we have, and most especially, whatever treasures we possess – all these are from God. We also hold on to all of God's promises including His promise to protect and love all those who follow His will. These will allow us to go through life with joy and peace in our hearts. When we do our best as if everything depends on us, and pray as if everything depends on God, we will experience miracles in our lives.

Mary's greatness was also manifested in her service love for her cousin Elizabeth. Mary's sacrificial love is an example for each one of us. When we put the needs of others before our own, we are truly blessed. In today's hurried times, spending long quiet moments with loved ones, just being in each other's loving presence has become uncommon. Let us spend more time with each other.
