NOVEMBER 17, 2012
MEMORIAL, SAINT ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY
SATURDAY 32ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

3 Jn 5-8 / Lk 18:1-8

3 JOHN 5-8
Beloved, you do well to care for the brothers and sisters as you do. I mean those coming from other places. They spoke of your charity before the assembled Church. It will be well to provide them with what they need to continue their journey, as if you did it for God. In reality, they have set out on the road for his name without accepting anything from the pagans. We should receive such persons, making ourselves their cooperators in the work of the truth.

LUKE 18:1-8
Jesus told them a parable, to show them that they should pray continually, and not lose heart. He said, "In a certain town there was a judge, who neither feared God nor people. In the same town there was a widow, who kept coming to him, saying, `Defend my rights against my opponent!' For a time he refused, but finally he thought, `Even though I neither fear God nor care about people, this widow bothers me so much, I will see that she gets justice; then she will stop coming and wearing me out." And Jesus said, "Listen to what the evil judge says. Will God not do justice for his chosen ones, who cry to him day and night, even if he delays in answering them? I tell you, he will speedily do them justice. But, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?"

REFLECTION
The parable of the unjust judge emphasizes not just the importance of prayer but also the power of persistent, fervent, sincere prayer with faith. The judge in the parable was not simply called an "unrighteous judge" but he was further described as one who "neither feared God nor respected any human being." The woman was not just any woman. She was a widow. If such an unjust judge who had no respect for any human being can give in to the repeated requests of a widow (someone who is alone and defenseless) to be vindicated of her adversary, how much more will a loving merciful Father grant the prayers of His own beloved children.

Prayer is a necessity in our everyday life. Just like a married couple who must constantly nurture their relationship with words of love and gratitude, so should we keep our relationship with our heavenly Father alive with continuous dialogue. Our communication lines with God should be always open. We should pray and talk to our Father with faith, not doubt; it should be with trust and belief.

As parents, do we not give in to our children who cajole and plead their case with us? When we pray, we should never lose faith or grow weary as our Father in heaven truly hears us and is pleased to see us reach out to Him. Constant prayer is not a sign of little faith but of persistent fervent faith. He calls us to call out to Him. He will surely hear us and embrace us when we cry out to Him.
