FRIDAY 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

NOVEMBER 23, 2012
MEMORIAL, ST CLEMENT I, ST COLUMBAN
FRIDAY 33RD WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Rv 10:8-11 / Lk 19:45-48

REVELATION 10:8-11
And the voice I had heard from heaven spoke again, saying to me, "Go near the angel who stands on the sea and on the land, and take the small book open in his hand." So I approached the angel and asked him for the small book; he said to me, "Take it and eat; although it be sweet as honey in your mouth, it will be bitter to your stomach." I took the small book from the hand of the angel, and ate it. It was sweet as honey in my mouth, but when I had eaten it, it turned bitter in my stomach. Then I was told, "You must again proclaim God's words about many peoples, nations, tongues and kings."

LUKE 19:45-48
Then Jesus entered the Temple area and began to drive out the merchants. And he said to them, "God says in the Scriptures, `My house shall be a house of prayer', but you have turned it into a den of robbers!" Jesus was teaching every day in the Temple. The chief priests and teachers of the Law wanted to kill him, and the elders of the Jews as well, but they were unable to do anything, for all the people were listening to him and hanging on his words.

REFLECTION
In the time of Jesus, the Jews went to the synagogues for daily prayer and to listen to the Word of God in the Scriptures. But the center of their faith was the temple in Jerusalem, where they offered yearly sacrifices during the important Jewish festivals. Now, about to end his public ministry, Jesus goes to the temple and purifies it of people who have made it into a veritable marketplace. Then he goes there every day to teach the people about his Father.

Why do some preachers of God's word attract listeners and others do not? The most obvious reason is that the former practice what they preach. They talk about God's love, the need of prayer and self-denial and love for the neighbor and they also do all these things. So people believe in the authenticity of their message because they are perceived to be genuine.

A second reason is in the content of the preaching. Some preachers talk about God in very lofty terms and use purely theoretical language without bringing their message down to the experience of the people. Jesus always spoke simply and clearly, using many examples of everyday life situations and symbolisms so people could relate to what he was saying. A preacher should be able to connect doctrine with daily life experiences.

A third reason is that some preachers give the impression that they are superior to their listeners and they intentionally or unintentionally lead people to idolize them instead of bringing the people closer to our Lord. Lastly, the immoral and scandalous way of life of some preachers turn people off to the extent that some of them abandon the Church.

Let us pray for our bishops, priests, and catechists, that they may be filled with the Holy Spirit and be given the humility and authenticity of Jesus.
