TUESDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
Prv 21:1-6, 10-13 / Lk 8:19-21
PROVERBS 21:1-6, 10-13
In the hands of Yahweh, the heart of the king is like running water; he directs it wherever he wishes. To the eyes of man all his ways are honest but it is Yahweh who weighs the heart. To do what is upright and just pleases Yahweh more than sacrifice. Haughty looks, proud heart, the light of the wicked is sin. The plans of a hardworking man result in earnings; poverty is for those who act too hastily. To make a fortune by means of deceit is like running after the wind; the end is death. The soul of the wicked desires nothing but evil; not even his friend is treated with compassion. When the mocker is punished the ignorant man grows wise; when the wise man is instructed he grows in knowledge. The Just One watches the house of the evildoer and hurls the wicked into misfortune. He who is deaf to the poor man's cry will not be heard when he himself calls out.
LUKE 8:19-21
Then his mother and his relatives came to him, but they could not get to him because of the crowd. Someone told him, "Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and wish to meet you." Then Jesus answered, "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it."
REFLECTION
Today's Gospel provides us with a glimpse into the personal life of Jesus during his public ministry. He has left home and begun preaching – yet those who are dear to him are still part of his life. In particular, the Gospel says: "The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him." Mary and others of the house of David who have known him since he was young seek his company. The crowd, clinging to Jesus' words, is sensitive to the value of family and how Jesus regards it. God has written "family" into human nature. Conscience can detect the importance of these relationships. "Honor your father and mother" is not just a request but a command from God.
Are we respectful of family life? Do work and other pursuits or personal interests in life keep us away from those who should be dear to us? Do we ever pull others away from their family obligations for whatever reason?
When speaking of family relationships, God wrote them into human nature at creation. When speaking of the Incarnation of the Son of God, however, a new relationship between God and man is created. Our human nature is now related directly to God through the person of God's Son. Jesus identified his mother in a very personal way when he replied: "My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it."
Mary is the model of hearing God's word and responding. Our response to Jesus in faith can introduce us into a personal, familiar relationship with him. Jesus has revealed the secret to entering into a personal relationship with him as brother or mother: heed the word of God and put it into practice. Thus, we may regard Jesus as someone who reveals God the Father to us. When we hear the word of God and put it into practice, God truly adopts us into his own family. Let us ask Jesus today to teach us to be more attentive to God's will so that we may truly regard Jesus as someone who reveals God to us.
Let us reflect on what we can do to build a better family relationship in our own family as Jesus would.
