MEMORIAL, ARCHANGELS MICHAEL, GABRIEL & RAPHAEL

SEPTEMBER 29, 2012
MEMORIAL, ARCHANGELS MICHAEL, GABRIEL & RAPHAEL
SATURDAY 25TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Dn 7:9-10, 13-14 or Rev 12:7-12a / Jn 1:47-51

REVELATION 12:7-12A
War broke out in heaven with Michael and his angels battling with the dragon. The dragon fought back with his angels, but they were defeated and lost their place in heaven. The great dragon, the ancient serpent known as the devil or Satan, seducer of the whole world, was thrown out. He was hurled down to earth, together with his angels. Then I heard a loud voice from heaven: Now has salvation come, with the power and the kingdom of our God, and the rule of his anointed. For our brothers' accuser has been cast out, who accused them night and day, before God. They conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they gave up their lives going to death. Rejoice, therefore, O you heavens and you who dwell in them; but woe to you, earth and sea, for the devil has come to you in anger knowing that he has but a little time.

JOHN 1:47-51
When Jesus saw Nathanael coming, he said of him, "Here comes an Israelite, a true one; there is nothing false in him." Nathanael asked him, "How do you know me?" And Jesus said to him, "Before Philip called you, you were under the fig tree, and I saw you." Nathanael answered, "Master, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" But Jesus replied, "You believe because I said, `I saw you under the fig tree.' But you will see greater things than that. Truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

REFLECTION
Jesus in today`s Gospel speaks of "angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man," referring to an incident in the Book of Genesis. In Jacob's dream, he saw a ladder with its feet on the ground and its top reaching to the heavens. The angels of God were moving up and down the ladder. Yahweh appeared to Jacob, standing over him, and he promised Jacob both numerous descendants and also the land on which he was sleeping.

The image of the ladder with Yahweh and the angels describes quite literally the function God has given them to play in the lives of human beings. Angels are messengers of Yahweh, intermediaries between God and humans. They bring God's word and his blessings to men and women. They are the agents through whom God intervenes in the lives of individuals and of human society, often enough quite dramatically.

Gabriel, for instance, had a main role in initiating God's plan of redemption. It was he who put to Mary God's invitation to conceive within her womb under the power of the Holy Spirit a child who will be holy and will be called Son of God.

The name `Michael' means "Who is like God." Michael was venerated by the Jewish people. In the Book of Daniel, he is called "the Great Commander who defends the sons of the Jewish people." The New Testament recognizes him as the leader of the angelic hosts in their victorious battle over Satan's evil forces.

The meaning of the name `Raphael' is "God has healed." Raphael was the companion Tobias chose to accompany him on a journey to a town two days distant from his hometown. Raphael protected Tobias on the journey, found a wife for him, and freed her of a curse that was upon her. He also cured Tobias' father of his blindness.

The angels serve us. They are the personalized manifestation of God's goodness to and love for us. It is as though the Lord loved us so tenderly and desired to show His goodness to us so intensely, that His love and his goodness became incarnate in the guise of the angels.
