MONDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Jer 13:1-11 / Mt 13:31-35
JEREMIAH 13:1-11
This is what Yahweh said to me: "Go! Buy yourself a linen belt and put it around your waist; do not put it in water." So I bought the belt as Yahweh ordered and put it around my waist. The word of Yahweh came to me a second time, "Take the belt you bought, the one you put around your waist, and go to the torrent Perah; hide it there in a hole in the rock." I went and hid it as Yahweh instructed me. After many days Yahweh said to me, "Go to the torrent Perah and get the belt I ordered you to hide there." I went to the torrent and dug up the belt but it was ruined and good for nothing, and Yahweh said to me, "In this way I will destroy the pride and great glory of Judah, this wicked people who refuse to heed what I say, this stubborn people who go after other gods to serve and worship them. And they shall become like this belt which is now good for nothing. For just as a belt is to be bound around a man's waist so was the people of Israel and Judah bound to me—it is Yahweh who speaks—to be my people, my glory and my honor; but they would not listen.
MATTHEW 13:31-35
Jesus offered them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, that a man took and sowed in his field. It is smaller than all other seeds, but once it is fully grown, it is bigger than any garden plant; like a tree, the birds come and rest in its branches." He told them another parable, "The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast that a woman took, and hid in three measures of flour, until the whole mass of dough began to rise." Jesus taught all this to the crowds by means of parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. So what the Prophet had said was fulfilled: I will speak in parables. I will proclaim things kept secret since the beginning of the world.
REFLECTION
The two parables in today's Gospel describe for us what the Kingdom of Heaven will be like in our lives. The first parable involves the mustard seed, which is very small. But, small things can often become big and strong. So too, can our faith.
The second parable involves yeast, which works best when it is worked into all the dough. The bread will turn out best if care is taken when kneading the dough. The whole dough is affected when yeast is added and it changes the bread mixture from a flat unleavened bread to a huge loaf.
The kingdom of God is like leaven. Christianity is the yeast, and it has a leavening as it permeates the whole culture, causing it to rise. In ancient times, leavened bread was considered the staff of life, the symbol of God's sustaining hand. The symbolism should be obvious: Christianity makes life a joy for godly people. It provides people with the very best.
Jesus is teaching us all about faith and its characteristics; how we should look if we are people of faith. First, like yeast, the presence of true faith in Jesus Christ should be quite noticeable – in our speech, in our actions, in the values we live by. Spending five minutes with us should be enough for a person to judge whether or not we are Christians or persons of faith. Our faith should not be hidden from those around us.
Second, like yeast, faith in Jesus Christ should permeate the entire life of a person. The nature of yeast is that it fills whatever it enters. Christianity is like that. No part of our lives can be separated from our faith. Our faith instructs us on how to live in every situation. Our faith should touch all parts of our lives and mold all attitudes.
