17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B

JULY 29, 2012
17TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B

2 Kgs 4:42-44 / Eph 4:1-6 / Jn 6:1-15

2 KINGS 4:42-44
A man came from Baalshalishad bringing bread and wheat to the man of God. These were from the first part of the harvest, twenty loaves of barley and wheat. Elisha told him, "Give the loaves to these men that they may eat." His servant said to him, "How am I to divide these loaves among one hundred men?" Elisha insisted, "Give them to the men that they may eat, for Yahweh says: They shall eat and have some left over." So the man set it before them; and they ate and had some left, as Yahweh had said.

EPHESIANS 4:1-6
Therefore I, the prisoner of Christ, invite you to live the vocation you have received. Be humble, kind, patient, and bear with one another in love. Make every effort to keep among you the unity of Spirit through bonds of peace. Let there be one body and one spirit, for God, in calling you, gave the same Spirit to all. One Lord, one faith, one baptism. One God, the Father of all, who is above all and works through all and is in all.

JOHN 6:1-15
After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, near Tiberias, and large crowds followed him, because of the miraculous signs they saw, when he healed the sick. So he went up into the hills and sat down there with his disciples. Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. Then lifting up his eyes, Jesus saw the crowds that were coming to him, and said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread so that these people may eat?" He said this to test Philip, for he himself knew what he was going to do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred silver coins would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a piece." Then one of Jesus' disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said, "There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish; but what good are these for so many?" Jesus said, "Make the people sit down." There was plenty of grass there, so the people, about five thousand men, sat down. Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were seated. He did the same with the fish, and gave them as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten enough, he told his disciples, "Gather up the pieces left over, that nothing may be lost." So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with bread, that is, with pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. When the people saw the miracle which Jesus had performed, they said, "This is really the Prophet, the one who is to come into the world." Jesus realized that they would come and take him by force to make him king; so he fled to the hills by himself.

REFLECTION
On one fine day, a hunter witnessed how a bear willingly shared a piece of meat with an injured hungry dog. The hungry hunter said to himself, "If God cares for the dog, how much more for me. I must learn to trust God." So the hungry hunter stayed in the middle of the jungle and waited for God to give him food. But to no avail. No bear came to give him a piece of meat. In his frustration, he blamed God and went home. On his way, he saw starving children. He blamed God again, "Why don't you feed these children?" Finally God broke His silence and answered, "I did something, I created you. But you choose to behave like the dog when you could have been like the bear."

In our Gospel, when Jesus and the disciples suddenly found themselves trapped in a remote hill with five thousand hungry people, the team was compelled to feed the crowd. In crisis situations like this, the disciples' usual fallback is to go to Jesus and pray: "God, what can you do for me?" Surprisingly, Jesus challenged them to do something for the crowd. Philip responded negatively, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little." On the other hand, Andrew, instead of sharing his food with others, volunteered the bread and fish of a boy.

The boy who gave his fish and bread teaches us the power of sharing whole-heartedly. The Lord loves a cheerful sharer and Jesus recognized the boy's generosity when he blessed his gift to humanity and the seed of a potential miracle. Because of his generosity, the boy eventually started a miracle that all of us are capable of doing – the miracle of sharing. When we share, we eventually destroy the evil of lack. Grace overflows when everybody learns to give.

When the boy unexpectedly shared his five loaves of bread and two fish, he challenged everybody to be generous and share their food with strangers. It is easy to share food with somebody we know, but not with strangers. Yet the boy's generosity rekindled everybody's potential to share, and when they did, everybody had enough to eat. The twelve baskets of leftover was the sign that there will always be an excess when everybody learns to share.

When you find yourself in the middle of scarcity, be not afraid to follow the boy's example. Instead of thinking, "What can I get?" we should say, "What can I give?" Miracles are not found solely in God's hands. We are God's children, capable of doing our own miracles.
