14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B
Ez 2:2-5 / 2 Cor 12:7-10 / Mk 6:1-6a
EZRA 2:2-5
They arrived with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum and Baanah. The list of the clans of the people of Israel: the clan of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two; the clan of Sehphatiah, three hundred and seventy- two; the clan of Arah, seven hundred and seventy-five;
2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-10
However, I better give up lest somebody think more of me than what is seen in me or heard from me. Lest I become proud after so many and extra ordinary revelations, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a true messenger of Satan, to slap me in the face. Three times I prayed to the Lord that it leave me, but he answered, "My grace is enough for you; my great strength is revealed in weakness." Gladly, then, will I boast of my weakness that the strength of Christ may be mine. So I rejoice when I suffer infirmities, humiliations, want, persecutions: all for Christ! For when I am weak, then I am strong.
MATTHEW 6:1-6A
Be careful not to make a show of your righteousness before people. If you do so, you do not gain anything from your Father in heaven. When you give something to the poor, do not have it trumpeted before you, as do those who want to be seen in the synagogues and in the streets, in order to be praised by the people. I assure you, they have been already paid in full. If you give something to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your gift remains really secret. Your Father, who sees what is kept secret, will reward you. When you pray, do not be like those who want to be seen. They love to stand and pray in the synagogues or on street corners to be seen by everyone. I assure you, they have already been paid in full. When you pray, go into your room, close the door, and pray to your Father who is with you in secret; and your Father who sees what is kept secret will reward you.
REFLECTION
In today's first reading, the prophet Ezekiel is told that he will face rejection of his message. Ezekiel's mission was to speak the truth despite apathy and resistance. In the second reading, St. Paul speaks about his mission of preaching God's word despite "a thorn in my flesh."
Maybe we have a thorn in the flesh that is not necessarily a physical ailment but may be certain people or events in our lives. St. Paul teaches us that we don't have to be perfect to be instruments of God. But we should never give up speaking the truth. These facts about the lives of the prophets are relevant to us because as a community we are called to speak and live God's word.
What if, like Ezekiel, we are not successful? What if, like St. Paul, we have a thorn in the flesh, a personal problem that we have to address? We cannot wait for our lives to be perfect before we speak and live the truth of God. We are not called to be problem-free, but to be faithful.
Like Ezekiel, we are not called to be popular. Like Paul, we are not called to be problem- free. Like Jesus himself, we are not called to be accepted by those nearest to us. But we are all called to be faithful. All of us may not be successful. But all of us can be faithful.
