FRIDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

OCTOBER 28, 2011
FEAST, STS SIMON AND JUDE, APOSTLES
FRIDAY 30TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

EPHESIANS 2:19-22
Now you are no longer strangers or guests, but fellow citizens of the
holy people: you are of the household of God. You are the house whose
foundations are the apostles and prophets, and whose cornerstone is
Christ Jesus. In him the whole structure is joined together and rises
to be a holy temple in the Lord. In him you too are being built to
become the spiritual sanctuary of God.

LUKE 6:12-16
Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in
prayer with God. When day came, he called his disciples to him and
chose twelve of them whom he called apostles: Simon, whom he named
Peter, and his brother Andrew, James and John; Philip and Bartholomew;
Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot;
Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

REFLECTION
It is particularly interesting to note that before Jesus chose and
picked the twelve apostles, he spent the whole night praying. He even
went up to the mountain where he would not be disturbed to discern
properly whom to choose for his disciples. Jesus showed as an example.
His act of praying is an invitation also for us to pray before making
any decision or in times of difficulty and suffering. When in doubt
about something, it is good to pray about it. Prayer consoles the
heart like nothing else can. Everything we do has to revolve around
God and prayer helps us precisely to center around God so that in the
end, we can be at peace.

The Eastern monks recited a prayer that was unceasing. They prayed the
prayer of the heart: Lord Jesus Son of God, have mercy on us.
Repeating this slowly, like the beating of the hear t, continuously,
and with regularity, we can enter into the realm and intimacy with
Christ.

Our God is a personal God. That is why the Gospel is very specific
with names because it is historical and not fiction. The very concrete
names mean that our God is also calling us by our names today, and
shaping out our respective histories. Our future is assured by our
Baptism which gives us faith to believe that God is leading us. When
we know that there is a God as our Father who is taking care of us,
there is nothing to fear nor worry. If God has called us, God will
surely bring His plan to completion. When all have abandoned us,
Christ is the only faithful servant who cares and sees our every need.
In him, we can truly find rest. Start praying today.
