FEAST, TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD

AUGUST 6, 2011
FEAST, TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD
SATURDAY 18TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

Dn 7:9-10, 13-14 / PS 97: 1-2, 5-6, 9 / 2 Pt 1:16-19 / Mt 17:1-9

DEUTERONOMY 7:9-10, 13-14
So know that Yahweh, your God, is the true and faithful God. He keeps
his covenant, and his love reaches to the thousandth generation for
those who love him and fulfill his commandments, but he punishes in
their own persons those who hate him and he repays them without delay.
He will love you, bless you and multiply you. He will bless you with
many children and abundant harvests: wheat, wine and oil; he will
multiply the young of your cattle and of your sheep in the land that
he promised your fathers he would give you. You shall be more favored
than all the peoples; there will be no sterile male or female among
your people or in your livestock.

MATTHEW 17:1-9
Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them
up a high mountain where they were alone. Jesus' appearance was
changed before them: his face shone like the sun and his clothes
became bright as light. Just then Moses and Elijah appeared to them,
talking with Jesus. Peter spoke and said to Jesus, "Master, it is good
that we are here. If you so wish, I will make three tents: one for
you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." Peter was still speaking when
a bright cloud covered them in its shadow, and a voice from the cloud
said, "This is my Son, the Beloved, my Chosen One. Listen to him." On
hearing the voice, the disciples fell to the ground, full of fear. But
Jesus came, touched them and said, "Stand up, do not be afraid." When
they raised their eyes, they no longer saw anyone except Jesus. And as
they came down the mountain, Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone
what they had just seen, until the Son of Man be raised from the dead.

REFLECTION
Surely it must be so nice to be up there. It must be one of those
precious moments when we experience much consolation – the times when
we reach a point beyond which is the beginning of "holy ground" where
God simply engulfs us with His immense love that our hearts and our
sins just melt away. Perhaps, a taste of heaven. But we cannot stay on
Mt. Tabor forever. Our brothers are down here and out there in the
heap of the garbage dump, in the sick beds of the hospitals, in the
rusty iron bars of the prison cells, along the cold cement of the
dirty sidewalks. St. Ignatius of Loyola says in the Spiritual
Exercises (#230), "… that love ought to manifest itself in deeds
rather than in words." So with God's grace, we strive to find Him in
the marketplace, in the poor, the sick, and the marginalized, in a
constant motion of loving service.

Lord, grant us the desire to find You and to serve You through the
abandoned and the unloved. Amen.
