THURSDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

JUNE 16, 2011
THURSDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

2 Cor 11:1-11 / Ps 111:1-2, 3-4, 7-8 / Mt 6:7-15

2 CORINTHIANS 11:1-11
Follow my example as I follow the example of Christ. I praise you
because you remember me in everything, and you keep the traditions
that I have given you. However I wish to remind you that every man has
Christ as his head, while the wife has her husband as her head; and
God is the head of Christ. If a man prays or prophesies with his head
covered, he dishonors his head. On the contrary, the woman who prays
or prophesies with her head uncovered, does not respect her head. She
might as well cut her hair. If a woman does not use a veil, let her
cut her hair; and if it is a shame for a woman to have her hair cut or
shaved, then let her use a veil. Men do not need to cover their head,
for they are the image of God and reflect his glory, while a woman
reflects the glory of man. Man was not formed from woman, but woman
from man. Nor did God create man for woman, but woman for man.
Therefore, a woman must respect the angels and have on her head the
sign of her dependence. Anyway, the Christian attitude does not
separate man from woman, and woman from man,

MATTHEW 6:7-15
Jesus said to his disciples, "When you pray, do not use a lot of
words, as the pagans do, for they hold that the more they say, the
more chance they have of being heard. Do not be like them. Your Father
knows what you need, even before you ask him. "This, then, is how you
should pray: Our Father in heaven, holy be your name, your kingdom
come and your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today the
kind of bread we need. Forgive us our debts just as we have forgiven
those who are in debt to us. Do not bring us to the test but deliver
us from the evil one. "If you forgive others their wrongs, your Father
in heaven will also forgive yours. If you do not forgive others, then
your Father will not forgive you either."

REFLECTION
Jesus acknowledges the hunger in our body and spirit: the need for
corporeal and spiritual nourishment. As humans, we need food to
survive, but "man does not live on bread alone." (Mt 4:4) We are meant
to live fully, to honor the Father by using the gifts we have been
given and to fulfill the purpose of our creation.

We are called to love as God loves; that is, to love our neighbors as
we love ourselves (Mt 22:39) and to love even our enemies! (Mt 5:44)
It is an extraordinary task that requires extraordinary effort, but
then, we are no ordinary creatures: we are made in the image and
likeness of our own Creator. Therefore, we must go beyond what is
normal and mediocre. We are not merely instinctive animals but
spiritual beings with a mission. Our love is not to be bound by
conditions.

So, in his wisdom, Jesus emphasizes the need to forgive. The heart
that keeps anger and hatred is restricted, while the heart that loves
and forgives expands. When we love freely, we do not have to select
the audience, the venue, the manner or presentation, or the message.
Fr. Anthony de Mello, S.J., in his book, "The Way to Love," likens us
to a rose. The rose, he says, does not have to choose to whom it shows
its beauty. It is for all to see. Thus, by forgiving, keeping our
hearts open, and loving freely, we do not burden ourselves with acting
or speaking differently towards different people. Like the rose, our
beauty as God's special children will shine for all to see.
