SATURDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

JUNE 18, 2011
SATURDAY 11TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR I

2 Cor 12:1-10 / Ps 34:8-9, 10-11, 12-13 / Mt 6:24-34

2 CORINTHIANS 12:1-10
With respect to spiritual gifts, I will remind you of the following.
When you were still pagans, you were irresistibly drawn to your dumb
idols. I tell you that nobody inspired by the Spirit of God may say,
"A curse on Jesus," as no one can say, "Jesus is the Lord," except by
the Holy Spirit. There is diversity of gifts, but the Spirit is the
same. There is diversity of ministries, but the Lord is the same.
There is diversity of works, but the same God works in all. The Spirit
reveals his presence in each one with a gift that is also a service.
One is to speak with wisdom, through the Spirit. Another teaches
according to the same Spirit. To another is given faith, in which the
Spirit acts; to another the gift of healing, and it is the same
Spirit. Another works miracles, another is a prophet, another
recognizes what comes from the good or evil spirit; another speaks in
tongues, and still another interprets what has been said in tongues.

MATTHEW 6:24-34
Jesus said to his disciples, "No one can serve t wo masters; for he
will either hate one and love the other, or he will be loyal to the
first and look down on the second. You cannot at the same time serve
God and money. "This is why I tell you not to be worried about food
and drink for yourself, or about clothes for your body. Is not life
more important than food and is not the body more important than
clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow, they do not
harvest and do not store food in barns, and yet your heavenly Father
feeds them. Are you not worth much more than birds? Can any of you add
a day to your life by worrying about it? Why are you so worried about
your clothes? Look at the flowers in the fields how they grow. They do
not toil or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his
wealth was clothed like one of these. If God so clothes the grass in
the field which blooms today and is to be burned tomorrow in an oven,
how much more will he clothe you? What lit tle faith you have! Do not
worry and say: What are we going to eat? What are we going to drink?
Or: what shall we wear? The pagans busy themselves with such things;
but your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Set your hear t
first on the kingdom and justice of God and all these things will also
be given to you. Do not worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry
about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."

REFLECTION
After reading today's Gospel, we must bear in mind that Matthew wrote
his Gospel for a church primarily composed of Jewish Christians. The
Jews of Jesus' time believed that material wealth with all its effects
are signs of God's favor.

We all know that money plays a very important function in our economy.
This was also true even in Jesus' time. However, what St. Matthew
wanted to emphasize to the people was that even if money, being the
medium of commercial transaction in society, is very important in the
life of a person, God must always be given first priority and be at
the center of their values and their lives.

How about us who are called to participate in God's work of restoring
the world that has been greatly damaged by sin, how do we understand
Jesus' teaching on the relative importance of material wealth in our
lives? What kind of response can we give to the call of our King to
share in his work of establishing his reign over all creation? What
can we do in our daily lives to address our growing awareness of our
vocation as God's stewards over the world?
