FRIDAY 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR II

DECEMBER 17, 2010
FRIDAY 3RD WEEK OF ADVENT – YEAR II

GENESIS 49:2, 8-10
Gather round, sons of Jacob, and listen; listen to Israel your father.
Judah, your brothers will praise you: you grip your enemies by the
neck, your father's sons will do you homage. Judah is a lion's whelp;
You stand over your prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies
down, a mighty lion: who dare rouse him? The sceptre shall not pass
from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until tribute
be brought him and the peoples render him obedience.

MATTHEW 1:1-17
Roll of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham:
Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, Jacob fathered Judah and
his brothers, Judah fathered Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab,
Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, Salmon fathered
Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz fathered Obed, whose mother was
Ruth, Obed fathered Jesse; and Jesse fathered King David. David
fathered Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, Solomon fathered
Rehoboam, Rehoboam fathered Abijah, Abijah fathered Asa, Asa fathered
Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat fathered Joram, Joram fathered Uzziah, Uzziah
fathered Jotham, Jotham fathered Ahaz, Ahaz fathered Hezekiah,
Hezekiah fathered Manasseh, Manasseh fathered Amon, Amon fathered
Josiah; and Josiah fathered Jechoniah and his brothers. Then the
deportation to Babylon took place. After the deportation to Babylon:
Jechoniah fathered Shealtiel, Shealtiel fathered Zerubbabel,
Zerubbabel fathered Abiud, Abiud fathered Eliakim, Eliakim fathered
Azor, Azor fathered Zadok, Zadok fathered Achim, Achim fathered Eliud,
Eliud fathered Eleazar, Eleazar fathered Matthan, Matthan fathered
Jacob; and Jacob fathered Joseph the husband of Mary; of her was born
Jesus who is called Christ. The sum of generations is therefore:
fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian
deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

REFLECTION
In Jesus' genealogy, a traditional list that traces paternity, five
women stand out very starkly: Tamar had incestuous relations with her
father-in-law. Rahab was a famous harlot. Ruth did the unacceptable
when she aggressively sought her husband-to-be by sneaking into his
bed at night. The "wife of Uriah," whose infamous name the evangelist
did not even try to mention, is shamefully remembered for commit ting
adultery with David. An exception of course would be Mary, the mother
of Jesus, but even she herself suffered a not so good reputation among
the people during that time, having been with child before marrying
Joseph.

Why did Jesus accept to be born of such an imperfect, even
disreputable lineage? Indeed, the mystery of the Incarnation lies in
the fact that Jesus willingly became part of humanity and made as his
own, the entire human family without exception. In Baptism, we have
all become part of Jesus' family and despite our imperfections and bad
reputations, we can always be assured of being acknowledged, embraced
and loved.
