TUESDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

OCTOBER 12, 2010
TUESDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

GALATIANS 5:1-6
Christ set us free, so that we should remain free. Stand firm, then,
and do not let yourselves be fastened again to the yoke of slavery. I,
Paul, give you my word that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be
of no benefit to you at all. I give my assurance once again to every
man who accepts circumcision that he is under obligation to keep the
whole Law; once you seek to be reckoned as upright through the Law,
then you have separated yourself from Christ, you have fallen away
from grace. We are led by the Spirit to wait in the confident hope of
saving justice through faith, since in Christ Jesus it is not being
circumcised or being uncircumcised that can effect anything -- only
faith working through love.

LUKE 11:37-41
He had just finished speaking when a Pharisee invited him to dine at
his house. He went in and sat down at table. The Pharisee saw this and
was surprised that he had not first washed before the meal. But the
Lord said to him, 'You Pharisees! You clean the outside of cup and
plate, while inside yourselves you are filled with extortion and
wickedness. Fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside
too? Instead, give alms from what you have and, look, everything will
be clean for you.

REFLECTION
The meal described in today's gospel begins in the midst of tension
and conflict. Jesus does not agree with the stand taken by the
Pharisee who had invited him. The Pharisee is shocked by the attitude
of Jesus. But it is clear that Jesus had acted in this manner on
purpose. He will not give the reason for his refusal to perform that
gesture.

Who is pure before God? In the minds of the Pharisees, that person is
pure who observes all the ritual regulations minutely. In the mind of
Jesus, that person is pure whose conscience is pure. What dirties a
person is not dust but greed and wickedness. Jesus goes straight to
the essentials. Jesus opposes the exterior religion of the Pharisees
to the religion of the heart, which store is pleasing to God.

In the entire bible, the heart stands for the deepest core of a
person. This is what really matters in the eyes of God. What is your
choice, your fundamental option? How is your heart towards God? God is
not only the maker of the visible creatures outside of us, but also
and chiefly, the maker of the human heart, the maker of our
consciences. As Jesus himself invites us, we should become more and
more attentive to what happens deep down inside us.

What matters in the sight of God is interior purity. But what is this
interior purity? Interior purity is the fruit of our love for others.
Our heart becomes pure through brotherly love, through almsgiving. Let
us listen once again to this surprising statement of Jesus and let us
take it to heart most seriously: "Give alms and everything will be
pure for you." In other words look to the needs of others with love
and everything will be pure for you.
