MEMORIAL, GUARDIAN ANGELS
MEMORIAL, GUARDIAN ANGELS
SATURDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
EXODUS 23:20-23
'Look, I am sending an angel to precede you, to guard you as you go
and bring you to the place that I have prepared. Revere him and obey
what he says. Do not defy him: he will not forgive any wrong-doing on
your part, for my name is in him. If, however, you obey what he says
and do whatever I order, I shall be an enemy to your enemies and a foe
to your foes. My angel will precede you and lead you to the home of
the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the
Hivites and the Jebusites, whom I shall exterminate.
MATTHEW 18:1-5, 10
At this time the disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Who is the
greatest in the kingdom of Heaven?' So he called a little child to him
whom he set among them. Then he said, 'In truth I tell you, unless you
change and become like little children you will never enter the
kingdom of Heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this
little child is the greatest in the kingdom of Heaven. 'Anyone who
welcomes one little child like this in my name welcomes me. 'See that
you never despise any of these little ones, for I tell you that their
angels in heaven are continually in the presence of my Father in
heaven.
REFLECTION
St. Matthew speaks of the special love and protectiveness that Jesus
reserves for the little ones. "They are not to be looked down upon ...
in heaven their angels have constant access to my Father." (Mt 18:10)
Further, in Matthew 18:6, Jesus issues a stern warning: "if anyone
causes one of these little ones who trust in me to lose his faith, it
would be better for him to have a rock tied to his neck and be thrown
into the seas." A grave warning, yet what is the plight of children in
this modern age? Over 25,000 children die every day around the world.
Then there is so much abuse of children. In 2005, there were an
estimated 2 million street children in the Philippines. Another 2
million were made to work in plantations, mines, quarries and
factories. Why this trend? Poverty is to blame. We despair of the
poverty driving young boys and girls to hidden works in the cover of
darkness, to sniff away their lives with rugby and the like. Begging
would be the least of their crimes. Prostitution, drugs, and petty
crimes are the darker picture.
Children are our future. What is to become of our next generation who
grow with poverty and the hopelessness of their lives? In 2005, 20,000
boys were jailed for serious crimes. Data from the Department of
Social work and Development (DSWD) show that 3,867 street children
have come in conflict with the law.
Though it is the nation's primary duty to provide for them, the
government seems unable to cope. We commend and pray for those private
and religious organizations who try to provide for these unfortunate
children. But the magnitude of their problem is so over whelming that
we need all hands on deck. Would you offer your hands?
