MEMORIAL, STS. JOACHIM AND ANN, PARENTS OF MARY

JULY 26, 2010
MEMORIAL, STS. JOACHIM AND ANN, PARENTS OF MARY
MONDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

SIRACH 44:1, 10-15
Next let us praise illustrious men, our ancestors in their successive
generations. But here is a list of illustrious men whose good works
have not been forgotten. In their descendants they find a rich
inheritance, their posterity. Their descendants stand by the
commandments and, thanks to them, so do their children's children.
Their offspring will last for ever, their glory will not fade. Their
bodies have been buried in peace, and their name lives on for all
generations. The peoples will proclaim their wisdom, the assembly will
celebrate their praises.

MATTHEW 13:16-17
'But blessed are your eyes because they see, your ears because they
hear! In truth I tell you, many prophets and upright people longed to
see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never
heard it.

REFLECTION
Today is the memorial of Saints Joachim and Ann, the parents of the
Blessed Virgin Mary. They lived devout and holy lives and this surely
influenced their beloved daughter tremendously.

When we are born, our first introduction to earthly life are our
parents. Their actions, their words, their love or lack of it are
always impressions that remain with us always. If our parents are good
and devout Christians, it is easier for us to understand the concept
of a loving God. Faith in God becomes part of their legacy and
education to us their children. But if they live irreligious, immoral
and pagan lives, we will have a hard time discerning right from wrong.

Parents have the duty, to teach their children about God as a loving
Father. They should also teach that goodness, kindness, hard work,
compassion, humility and generosity are all necessary to lead a good
life. They impress on their children to think of others first before
themselves just as Jesus always did. They must teach them to love and
respect Mother Church who will complete their education in the faith.

To have good and devout parents is the greatest treasure any son or
daughter can have. In turn, we as their children, must honor, love and
respect our parents, especially when they are old or sick. We must
care for them when they can no longer take care of themselves.
