SATURDAY 4TH WEEK OF LENT – YEAR II

JEREMIAH 11:18-20
Yahweh informed me and I knew it; you then revealed their scheming to
me. I for my part was like a trustful lamb being led to the
slaughterhouse, not knowing the schemes they were plotting against me,
'Let us destroy the tree in its strength, let us cut him off from the
land of the living, so that his name may no longer be remebered!'
Yahweh Sabaoth, whose judgement is upright, tester of motives and
thoughts, I shall see your vengeance on them, for I have revealed my
cause to you.

JOHN 7:40-53
Some of the crowd who had been listening said, 'He is indeed the
prophet,' and some said, 'He is the Christ,' but others said, 'Would
the Christ come from Galilee? Does not scripture say that the Christ
must be descended from David and come from Bethlehem, the village
where David was?' So the people could not agree about him. Some wanted
to arrest him, but no one actually laid a hand on him. The guards went
back to the chief priests and Pharisees who said to them, 'Why haven't
you brought him?' The guards replied, 'No one has ever spoken like
this man.' 'So,' the Pharisees answered, 'you, too, have been led
astray? Have any of the authorities come to believe in him? Any of the
Pharisees? This rabble knows nothing about the Law -- they are
damned.' One of them, Nicodemus -- the same man who had come to Jesus
earlier -- said to them, 'But surely our Law does not allow us to pass
judgement on anyone without first giving him a hearing and discovering
what he is doing?' To this they answered, 'Are you a Galilean too? Go
into the matter, and see for yourself: prophets do not arise in
Galilee.' They all went home.

REFLECTION
Choosing a leader these days is a difficult task. We are bombarded
with advertisements, slogans, text messages, campaign jingles and
handouts by a multitude of candidates. Each of them extols his
background, educational accomplishments, track record and even singing
talent while putting down his rivals. Yet despite all these, when we
are in the voting booth about to cast our ballot, we still cannot
really say that we know enough about them to make a confident choice.

In this chapter from the gospel of St. John, Jesus tries to convince
the people in the temple that he has been sent by God. He hints at his
identity as the Messiah. But no matter what he tells them, he cannot
convince all of them. Instead of listening, the Pharisees look at his
humble origins and close their hearts.

We are fortunate because we now know through Holy Scripture that Jesus
is the Messiah. But knowing and believing are different things. Jesus
is always ready to reveal himself to us if we are willing to invest
the time and effort to get to know him. Lent is a good time for us to
make the first move. This season of silence invites us to become
intimate with the Lord and accept him as our Savior.
