SOLEMNITY, MARY, MOTHER OF GOD – YEAR

JANUARY 1, 2010
SOLEMNITY, MARY, MOTHER OF GOD – YEAR C

NUMBERS 6:22-27
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said, 'Speak to Aaron and his sons and say:
"This is how you must bless the Israelites. You will say: May Yahweh
bless you and keep you. May Yahweh let his face shine on you and be
gracious to you. May Yahweh show you his face and bring you peace."
This is how they must call down my name on the Israelites, and then I
shall bless them.'

GALATIANS 4:4-7
But when the completion of the time came, God sent his Son, born of a
woman, born a subject of the Law, to redeem the subjects of the Law,
so that we could receive adoption as sons. As you are sons, God has
sent into our hearts the Spirit of his Son crying, 'Abba, Father'; and
so you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir,
by God's own act.

LUKE 2:16-21
So they hurried away and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in
the manger. When they saw the child they repeated what they had been
told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the
shepherds said to them. As for Mary, she treasured all these things
and pondered them in her heart. And the shepherds went back glorifying
and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had
been told. When the eighth day came and the child was to be
circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had
given him before his conception.

REFLECTION
Today, we celebrate three important events. Today is the first day of
the year and so we take the time to reflect and thank the Lord for the
past year's blessings and challenges, and we offer the New Year to the
Lord, trusting that he will take care of us this coming year.

Today is also a First Friday of the Month and so we offer ourselves to
the Sacred Heart of Jesus, so that we may be filled with His Love and
so filled, that we may also witness this Love to others around us.

Today is also the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. Thus, in our
prayers, we ask Mary, the Mother of Jesus our Lord, to help us as we
move into the New Year and into this phase of our lives.

In today's Gospel, however, the shepherds take center stage in the
mystery of Incarnation. How appropriate that among all these big
feasts and great happenings, it is the common man, the lowly shepherd
that is first given the opportunity to worship the new born Babe.

How truly God loves us, ordinary and regular people.
