33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

NOVEMBER 15, 2009
33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – B

DANIEL 12:1-3
In those days, I Daniel, heard this word of the Lord: "At that time
there shall arise Michael, the great prince, guardian of your people;
it shall be a time unsurpassed in distress since nations began until
that time. At that time your people shall escape, everyone who is
found written in the book. Many of those who sleep in the dust of the
earth shall awake; some shall live forever, others shall be an
everlasting horror and disgrace. But the wise shall shine brightly
like the splendor of the firmament, and those who lead the many to
justice shall be like the stars forever."

HEBREWS 10:11-14, 18
Brothers and sisters: Every priest stands daily at his ministry,
offering frequently those same sacrifices that can never take away
sins. But this one offered one sacrifice for sins, and took his seat
forever at the right hand of God; now he waits until his enemies are
made his footstool. For by one offering he has made perfect forever
those who are being consecrated. Where there is forgiveness of these,
there is no longer offering for sin.

MARK 13:24-32
Jesus said to his disciples: "In those days after that tribulation the
sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the
stars will be falling from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will
be shaken. "And then they will see 'the Son of Man coming in the
clouds' with great power and glory, and then he will send out the
angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the end of the
earth to the end of the sky. "Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When
its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is
near. In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that
he is near, at the gates. Amen, I say to you, this generation will not
pass away until all these things have taken place. Heaven and earth
will pass away, but my words will not pass away. "But of that day or
hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but
only the Father."

REFLECTION
Death is a reality that all of us have to face. It will come sooner or
later. Yet some of us choose not to talk about it. We feel uneasy and
uncomfortable because we consider it a morbid topic. Besides, why talk
about endings such as death when it seems so remote? We are still in
the spring of our years and generally heal thy giving the illusion of
invincibility or immortality. However, time comes when we find
ourselves in a situation that somehow forces us to face the issue.
When things happen such as a sudden passing away of a loved one or a
good friend, we somehow come face to face with our own mortality and
the inevitability of death. Many questions are suddenly raised,
foremost of which is: why did it happen?

This sense of the inevitability and uncertainty of when it may happen
are echoed in our readings today. Today's Gospel is a good reminder
that there will be an end of time, there will be a consummation, a
completion of what began in creation. The Gospel speaks of end-time
themes of the world and the final coming of Jesus to take all peoples
and all creation to himself. Jesus promises to come again but he does
not give us a timetable. Jesus speaks of the appearance of the Son of
Man in glory and the final establishment of the Reign of God. No one,
says Jesus, not even he knows when the end will come. It is not for us
to worry. Worrying will not help. Speculation, regarding "end times,"
is not useful. Only the Father in heaven knows the exact time when the
world will end. With these in mind, in what way do we remain alert for
such eventuality? Instead of becoming anxious and afraid, the
awareness of the reality of the end may motivate us to do something
about our lives.

We do not know the exact time of the end of things and time. But we
can pray for conversion that may be manifested in peace. Let us not
delay or put off our efforts to achieve it. It is the present which
determines the future; let's concentrate on the here and now. Let us
allow Jesus to reign in our hearts; something that would make the
coming feast of the Christ the King a bit more meaningful.
