MEMORIAL, ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS, PRIEST & DOCTOR

DECEMBER 14, 2007
MEMORIAL, ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS, PRIEST & DOCTOR
FRIDAY 2ND WEEK OF ADVENT - YEAR I

ISAIAH 48:17-19
Thus says the Lord, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I, the
Lord, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the
way you should go. If you would hearken to my commandments, your
prosperity would be like a river, and your vindication like the waves
of the sea; Your descendants would be like the sand, and those born
of your stock like its grains, Their name never cut off or blotted
out from my presence.

MATTHEW 11:16-19
Jesus said to the crowds: "To what shall I compare this generation?
It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one
another, `We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang
a dirge but you did not mourn.' For John came neither eating nor
drinking, and they said, `He is possessed by a demon.' The Son of
Man came eating and drinking and they said, `Look, he is a glutton
and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom
is vindicated by her works."

REFLECTION
There are some people who find fault with everything. They are never
pleased with the movies they see and they are never satisfied with
the dinners they eat. When it comes to religion they do not abandon
their critical spirit.

Today's Gospel suggests that Jesus was frustrated with such people.
If these critical minded people had humbly opened themselves to the
wisdom of the Spirit, they would have seen the meaning both of the
preaching of John the Baptist and the joyous message of salvation of
Jesus. The spirit of repentance preached by John the Baptist leads
to the joy of forgiveness proclaimed by Jesus.

John's role was one of preparation for the coming of Jesus just as
sorrow for one's sin is a preparation for full Christian living.
When our sins are washed away, we are flooded with the love of God.
God dwells within us as in a temple. Joy is truly the echo of God's
life within us.

During this season of Advent, let us reflect on the truth that God so
loved the world that he sent his only Son to be our Savior. Wisdom
tells us that this is a clause, not for grief, but for joy, because
the God-man came to provide a place for us in the kingdom of heaven.
The opportunity is laid before us. Let us not misinterpret Jesus or
the words he speaks.
