Friday 24th Week in Ordinary Time - Yr II
1 CORINTHIANS 15:12-20
Brothers and sisters: If Christ is preached as raised from the dead,
how can some among you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If
there is no resurrection of the dead, then neither has Christ been
raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then empty too is our
preaching; empty, too, your faith. Then we are also false witnesses to
God, because we testified against God that he raised Christ, whom he
did not raise if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are
not raised, neither has Christ been raised, and if Christ has not been
raised, your faith is vain; you are still in your sins. Then those who
have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If for this life only we
have hoped in Christ, we are the most pitiable people of all. But now
Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have
fallen asleep.
LUKE 8:1-3
Jesus journeyed from one town and village to another, preaching and
proclaiming the good news of the Kingdom of God. Accompanying him were
the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and
infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone
out, Joanna, the wife of Herod's steward Chuza, Susanna, and many
others who provided for them out of their resources.
REFLECTION
St. Luke tells us that in addition to the men who traveled about
Palestine with Jesus, there was also a group of women. These were women
whom Jesus had freed from evil spirits or varied illnesses. They
provided Jesus with the money needed to finance his ministry.
These women did not preach or teach. Israelite society was rigidly
patriarchal and would not approve of this. But it is extraordinary that
Jesus, in a society which did not even allow a man to talk in public
with a woman other than his wife, should have had women in his
entourage, traveling with him and his disciples up and down the length
and breadth of Palestine.
Since the days of Jesus, women's rights have come a long way. Universal
suffrage is practiced in most parts of the world. Women are serving in
elective and appointive political positions. Women hold high positions
in corporations, and in our country they're deeply involved in
non-governmental organizations.
In the Church, women lecture in seminaries, direct retreats, are deeply
involved in spiritual direction, and hold various posts in parish and,
to some extent, in diocesan structures.
We should pray that the talents and experience of the women in our
Catholic population will continually be made available to the Church
for its enrichment and the enrichment of Catholic life.
