SATURDAY 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

OCTOBER 8, 2005
SATURDAY 27TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

JOEL 4:12-21
Thus says the LORD: Let the nations bestir themselves and come up to
the Valley of Jehoshaphat; For there will I sit in judgment upon all
the neighboring nations. Apply the sickle, for the harvest is ripe;
Come and tread, for the wine press is full; The vats overflow, for
great is their malice. Crowd upon crowd in the valley of decision; For
near is the day of the LORD in the valley of decision. Sun and moon are
darkened, and the stars withhold their brightness. The LORD roars from
Zion, and from Jerusalem raises his voice; The heavens and the earth
quake, but the LORD is a refuge to his people, a stronghold to the
children of Israel. Then shall you know that I, the LORD, am your God,
dwelling on Zion, my holy mountain; Jerusalem shall be holy, and
strangers shall pass through her no more. And then, on that day, the
mountains shall drip new wine, and the hills shall flow with milk; And
the channels of Judah shall flow with water: A fountain shall issue
from the house of the LORD, to water the Valley of Shittim. Egypt shall
be a waste, and Edom a desert waste, Because of violence done to the
people of Judah, because they shed innocent blood in their land. But
Judah shall abide forever, and Jerusalem for all generations. I will
avenge their blood, and not leave it
unpunished. The LORD dwells in Zion.

LUKE 11:27-28
While Jesus was speaking, a woman from the crowd called out and said to
him, "Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you
nursed." He replied, "Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of
God and observe it."

REFLECTION
It is not enough to talk about the gospel. We must live it. We cannot
just hear the radical words of Jesus. We must change our life according
to Jesus' standards and keep his words.

We love to go to seminars, conventions and rallies to hear radical
teaching about Jesus. We all applaud and sing and celebrate emotional
liturgies. Then we go home and continue on with the business as usual.
Jesus says that we must keep his words, as well as hear them if we are
to be "blest".

This makes perfect sense. To agree to something in your mind and then
disagree with that same thing in your lifestyle is a blatant
contradiction that leads to eventual frustration. To be blest means to
be happy. We cannot ever be happy if we are frustrated.

If there is a contradiction between our belief and our life, then we
must change either our belief or our life in order to be happy. As
scripture says: "You cannot serve two masters." Likewise scripture
says: "The kingdom divided against itself is bound for ruin." If we
truly believe in Jesus, then our life must be consistent with our
words. Otherwise, we are living a lie.

Is our life consistent with our belief? Do we merely listen to Jesus'
words or do we really follow him by giving him our whole life? Jesus
says: "I have come that you may have life and have it to the full."
Only by living our belief in Jesus will we be truly fulfilled. Only
then will we end our frustration and be truly happy. Only in Christ
will our life be truly blest.

God's overall intention for our lives is not that we come to know and
serve him in some distant, slavish sort of way but that we should be
intimately united with him as his children. Doing God's will is not so
much about taking glorious action as about becoming, in the power of
the Spirit, the person he intends us to be. For "in him we live and
move and have our being."

PRAYER
"Lord, my heart is restless until it rests in you. Help me to live in
your presence and in the knowledge of your great love for me. And help
me to offer to you what you desire rather than what I want."
