MONDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

OCTOBER 10, 2005
MONDAY 28TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

ROMANS 1:1-7
Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus, called to be an Apostle and set apart
for the Gospel of God, which he promised previously through his
prophets in the holy Scriptures, the Gospel about his Son, descended
from David according to the flesh, but established as Son of God in
power according to the Spirit of holiness through resurrection from the
dead, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through him we have received the grace of
apostleship, to bring about the obedience of faith, for the sake of his
name, among all the Gentiles, among whom are you also, who are called
to belong to Jesus Christ; to all the beloved of God in Rome, called to
be holy. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ.

LUKE 11:29-32
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them,
"This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign
will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign
to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the
judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this
generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of
the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater
than Solomon here. At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with
this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they
repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here."

REFLECTION
In every generation there is evil. One particularly frightening
manifestation of evil is that of resistance to God and aversion to
moral goodness in all its forms: religious apathy, the intellectual
cynicism that poisons the well of Christian goodness, the ever present
idol of consumerism, a biotech industry which refuses moral parameters,
an educational system whose "orthodoxy" is moral relativism and which
allows generation after generation of teenagers to grope in the dark
for something to give meaning to their lives. Such are the earmarks of
an evil generation.

What sign are we called to be for an "evil generation"? If we look at
Jesus' example, we find that he did not give the men and women of his
generation the "sign" that they wanted: no making the moon turn blood
red, no miraculous survival from jumping off the pinnacle of the Temple
in Jerusalem, no making it rain golden coins. Jesus did not tell the
crowds what they wanted to hear. He told them what they needed to hear.
What does our generation need-but perhaps not want-to hear from
committed and faithful Catholics? What is the particular "message" that
we are called to give to those closest to us on a day-to-day basis?

For many of those around us, we may be the only possible link to Jesus,
to his Church, to moral truth, to the truth, which sets people free. By
our baptism, we are committed to transmit this truth, in the most
effective way possible to all those around us. Jesus places a personal
hope in each one of us.

Jesus came to bring fire to the earth and he wants to set it ablaze
everywhere through us. He has entrusted the torch to us. If we do not
act, the world will never catch fire. If we fail to venture out, there
may be some corner of the earth that will never receive the flame. We
are Jesus' hope, Jesus' fire, Jesus' hands. The cold, darkened world is
crying out to us, perhaps unawares, for the light and fire that we bear
in your hearts.

Time is short and the world is big. Can Jesus count on us to be his
spokesperson, his mouthpiece? We have received the greatest of gifts,
the gift of faith in Jesus and his Church. What are we doing on a
day-to-day basis to share that gift with our brothers and sisters?

One of the greatest joys in our life is to be a channel through which
we communicate Jesus' light and truth to someone who is lost in the
darkness of an evil age. Let us do our best to make Jesus the center of
our daily lives. Let us take advantage of the life that Jesus has given
us to make him known and loved by all those around us with the urgency
of St. Paul who says: "The love of Christ obliges me."

PRAYER
"Lord, change my heart and fill me with your wisdom that I my love your
ways. Give me grace and courage to resist temptation and stubborn
willfulness that I may truly desire to do what is pleasing to you."
