MEMORIAL, ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, PRIEST
TUESDAY 26TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I
ZECHARIAH 8:20-23
Thus says the LORD of hosts: There shall yet come peoples, the
inhabitants of many cities; and the inhabitants of one city shall
approach those of another, and say, "Come! let us go to implore the
favor of the LORD"; and, "I too will go to seek the LORD." Many peoples
and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem
and to implore the favor of the LORD. Thus says the LORD of hosts: In
those days ten men of every nationality, speaking different tongues,
shall take hold, yes, take hold of every Jew by the edge of his garment
and say, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."
LUKE 9:51-56
When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely
determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of
him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his
reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination
of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw
this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to
consume them?" Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to
another village.
REFLECTION
During the time of Jesus, the Jews and the Samaritans disliked each
other due to their differing beliefs. Jesus' disciples were brought up
believing they were the chosen people of God and the Samaritans were an
outcast group of heretics. Hence, James and John manifested their
displeasure over the Samaritans' inhospitality by asking Jesus to send
fire from heaven to consume the insolent villagers.
Jesus rebuked the two apostles even for thinking about punishing the
Samaritans. After all, one of Jesus' parables was about the Good
Samaritan. And in the case of the curing of the ten lepers (Luke
17:11-19), the only leper who came back to thank Jesus was a Samaritan.
Jesus shows no prejudice either to Gentiles or Samaritans when
preaching the Good News.
We note however, Jesus' attitude seems to be in stark contrast when he
passes through other towns and villages (Luke 10:13-16). It is as if
Jesus is more sensitive to the attitudes of His own people than that of
the Samaritans or foreign villages.
Perhaps as Jesus refers to us as the salt of the earth and the light of
the world, he pushes us extra hard especially on how we should act and
live out our duties as Christians. We are baptized not to become
members of an exclusive upper class people of God but to become
servants of the Lord's Word. We are not a select group with reserved
places in heaven, we are chosen disciples tasked to spread the good
news of Christ's love and salvation.
Let us be reminded today, that as Christians we have a responsibility
to not only follow God but to bring God to those who do not know Him.
PRAYER
"Lord, you are gracious and merciful. Free me from prejudice and
intolerance towards those I find disagreeable, and widen my heart to
love them and to seek their good."
