MEMORIAL, OUR LADY OF SORROWS

SEPTEMBER 15, 2005
MEMORIAL, OUR LADY OF SORROWS
THURSDAY 24TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

1 TIMOTHY 4:12-16
Beloved: Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example
for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.
Until I arrive, attend to the reading, exhortation, and teaching. Do
not neglect the gift you have, which was conferred on you through the
prophetic word with the imposition of hands by the presbyterate. Be
diligent in these matters, be absorbed in them, so that your progress
may be evident to everyone. Attend to yourself and to your teaching;
persevere in both tasks, for by doing so you will save both yourself
and those who listen to you.

JOHN 19:25-27
Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister,
Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother
and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother, "Woman,
behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother."
And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

REFLECTION
How do we face the crosses that we encounter in our daily lives? Do we
just murmur or talk to ourselves? Do we quietly cry or even cry out
loud? Do we complain loudly and show indignation? Or do we pray
quietly with fasting and supplication? Perhaps this is the model of
active living in faith that Jesus would like to remind us of in today's
gospel. When we face our trials, sufferings and cross, have
we ever stood under the Cross and looked at the loving eyes of our
Blessed Lord as He hung on the piece of wood?

While He hung on the cross, Jesus saw His beloved mother, the women who
served Him and a loyal apostle who did not desert Him. At the foot of
the cross, Blessed Mother agonized with her beloved son but kept her
agony in her heart. Mary Magdalene and Clopas joined the Beloved
Mother in her grief while John stood protectively over the women of
Jerusalem and quietly recalled his moments with his Mentor, Teacher and
Rabbi.

John recalled the first words of admiration that made him follow Jesus
- "Look, there is the Lamb of God!" (Jn.2:36). He also recalled Jesus'
invitation, "Come and see." (Jn.2:39) All these events brought him to
this fateful, sorrowful moment at the foot of the Cross. Jesus said to
John and the Blessed Mother: "Woman, there is your son." As John looked
up to his Beloved Master, Jesus spoke to him, "There is your mother."

Jesus entrusted John with a new role-- the care, protection and
guardianship of the Blessed Mother and the other disciples. This is
perhaps the reason for John's protective attitude and stance towards
the women. As John must have felt his love for Jesus, John is now given
a new role at the foot of the cross -- to love and care for others.

When was the last time we stood at the foot of the Cross with our
trials, suffering, and tribulations in our minds and hearts and felt
His empowering love changing us and giving us new roles to love?

PRAYER
"Lord Jesus Christ, by your death on the cross you have won pardon for
us and freedom from the tyranny of sin and death. May I live in the joy
and freedom of your victory over sin and death."
