FRIDAY 22ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

SEPTEMBER 2, 2005
FRIDAY 22ND WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR I

COLOSSIANS 1:15-20
Brothers and sisters: Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God,
the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in
heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or
dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through
him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold
together. He is the head of the Body, the Church. He is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be
preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and
through him to reconcile all things for him, making
peace by the Blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or
those in heaven.

LUKE 5:33-39
The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, "The disciples of John the
Baptist fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the
Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink." Jesus answered them,
"Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with
them? But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away
from them, then they will fast in those days." And he also told them a
parable. "No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an
old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not
match the old cloak. Likewise, no one pours new wine into old
wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be
spilled, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine must be poured
into fresh wineskins. And no one who has been drinking old wine desires
new, for he says, 'The old is good.'"

REFLECTION
The Pharisees complain that Jesus and His followers do not fast but
instead eat and drink even during the Sabbath. The Pharisees argue
that even the followers of John the Baptist fast, implying that Jesus
and His disciples are serious violators of the Pharisees' valued Law of
the Jews.

We can imagine Jesus' annoyance at the Pharisees' nit picking of the
details of the Law. At this point of His ministry, He has already
chastised the Pharisees several times for their hypocrisy and
over-attention to the technicalities of the Law. Jesus' reply to the
Pharisees is in the form a parable with a pointed logic: "no one pours
new wine into old wineskins." (Luke 5:37) Jesus was bluntly telling
the Pharisees to renew their perspective, and realize what
the Law and the prophecies have come to mean: that a Savior will and
has come and will form a new covenant of love with all people -
believers and sinners alike.

Jesus is the new wine, the new cloak, and the bridegroom; in his
company, we need not fast but instead celebrate. It is logical then
that we welcome Him and renew ourselves. If we stick to our old ways,
we would be like old wineskins unable to hold new wine.

Let us look to Christ with a renewed heart and a renewed Spirit. St.
Paul best describes how we should see and accept Christ in his letter
to the Colossians in today's reading.

"For in Him all the fullness was pleased to dwell and
through Him to reconcile all things to Him, making
peace by the blood of His cross, whether those on
earth or those in heaven." (Col 1:19-20)

PRAYER
"Lord, fill me with your Holy Spirit, that I may grow in the
knowledge of your great love and truth. Help me to seek you
earnestly in prayer and fasting that I may turn away from sin and
willfulness and conform my life more fully to your will. May I always
find joy in knowing, loving, and serving you."
